How To Change Water Filter In Samsung Fridge
I accept dabbled in dwelling house improvement projects and like giving advice to others on what not to do.
The Dreaded Dead H2o Filter
Ah, the dreaded "dead filter" icon—a glaring cherry-red symbol disfiguring the elegant face of your Samsung refrigerator. Yous could ignore information technology; information technology won't hurt the refrigerator. Simply who knows what could be swimming around inside that kludged filter?
Also, the affair is similar a chipped tooth; you merely can't ignore it. If yous are like me, you might feel a petty intimidated by the prospect of changing the filter. Fright not. I'll show you how.
These directions are for the Samsung RS265TDRS specifically. So, if you take another model, the details may differ a fleck. However, some things, like the advisability of shutting off the water to the unit of measurement get-go, are universal.
How to Replace a Samsung Refrigerator Water Filter
- Have a replacement filter handy.
- Shut off the water source to your refrigerator, most probable under your kitchen sink.
- Locate the filter compartment in the bottom correct-hand section of the door's interior.
- Remove the vegetable bin if necessary for access.
- To remove old filter, grasp the ridge on the outward surface. It should exist vertical or locked.
- Turn one-quarter plow counter-clockwise and pull out.
- Insert new filter and plow i-quarter turn clockwise to lock in place.
- Run water dispenser for at least 30 seconds to purge air and impurities.
- Reset the filter light by property down the water selector switch for three seconds.
Have a Replacement Filter Handy
First, the replacement filter. You may discover 1 equally nearby as your local habitation-improvement store. But you won't find the best deal at that place. It may take a few days to go the replacements in your hot lilliputian hands if you lot follow my option, but ordering online saved me about forty%. I think that the absolute best prices are at specialty sites, but I went with Amazon.com, which was easy to deal with and very nearly as inexpensive. I saved more by buying a iii-pack.
You demand to know the part number. Information technology'southward in your manual, only if your fridge is the RS265TDRS, so you lot need filter DA29-00020B.
Yous are looking at the bottom of the correct-hand (refrigerator) section of the unit, with the door open. The vegetable bin at the very bottom has been removed and you lot are looking at the superlative of the filter facing you on the lower right. That's where they hide the thing.
Close Off the H2o Source to Your Fridge
Call back to close off the h2o. That blurry, blobby thing in the middle of the photo to a higher place is a close-off valve. Look for yours. This one is under my kitchen sink, and that's a popular location. Merely wait for likely candidates, plough them off, and cheque whether the water dispenser is nevertheless doing its affair. If not, yous are articulate for have-off.
If worse comes to worst, you can always plough the water off at the meter. This is easy but may require a special tool.
Locate the Filter
Removing the filter is—as the kids say—crazy simple. Just grasp the ridge on the outward surface. It should be vertical, which is the 'locked' position. Turn one-quarter plow counter-clockwise (so the summit moves to the left), and pull it out.
Read More than From Dengarden
The instructions note that hard h2o may leave deposits that make the filter hard to turn or remove. The recommended remedy: Apply more force. Actually! To install the new filter, simply reverse the steps.
Run the Water Earlier Use
Once you've installed the new filter (and replaced the vegetable bin), at that place's just one major footstep. Run the h2o dispenser for 30 seconds or more (the official video below says five minutes) to purge any air or impurities that may have gotten into the system. In my example, quite a lot of air got in there, spraying me with water when I kickoff ran the dispenser. Better you than your dinner guest!

Thanks for your quick response!
Nosotros've had the refrigerator awhile and commonly modify out the filter when the water starts to taste funny. Nosotros take replaced the ice machine motor at 1 time a few years ago because it stopped making ice.
Other than that, I'll wait into testing the water.
Doc Snow (author) from Camden, South Carolina on February 24, 2020:
Hi, Angela--yes, the calorie-free is supposed to stay on. But it should plough blue when the filter is replaced and the lines purged, from the cherry-red color indicating the need for a filter change.
I don't know why y'all oasis't seen the indicator turn red. Have y'all had the refrigerator long? (I'm guessing 'aye' since you lot say that it'due south the aforementioned model--and that model is no longer annihilation close to new.) And practice y'all alter the filter regardless?
Maybe your water supply is unusually clean, or maybe the sensor/control arrangement that should turn on the indicator isn't working properly in some respect. Do you have whatever other reason for concern nigh the water quality, or the operation of the frig? If so, there are quite a few options for having the h2o tested that y'all could pursue.
ANgela on February 23, 2020:
I noticed in your success photo, the filter low-cal was however on? Is it supposed to still stay on? I take the same model fridge but my filter light has never turned cherry...(?)
Doc Snowfall (author) from Camden, Due south Carolina on October 15, 2018:
Perhaps yous don't, if it's never caused you lot bug. To be honest, I never checked the necessity of that pace, assuming that non doing so created the danger of leakage. But perhaps at that place'southward a check valve built in to the fixture that renders that unnecessary.
But I'one thousand curious; if you lot've already done this many times, what prompted yous to read an article on how to it?

Why must I shut off the water source to the dispenser? I've changed it many times and never knew to do that.
Doctor Snow (author) from Camden, Southward Carolina on February 01, 2018:
Well, that'south a new one on me, Doris. If it is truly 'hot'--not simply warmish--and then you may accept a really serious problem, and I'd find a repair shop, fast.
Still, if it's just sort of warmish I would:
1) Brand sure that the frig hadn't been accidentally been reset in a way that turned off refrigeration. (For example, there is a 'exhibit way' that does that; information technology may also be possible that the temperature was reset also high.) Consult your transmission on settings; if you don't have a paper copy, y'all should be able to download it from the Samsung website. (At that place's a label on the frig giving the model number; use that to brand certain you lot have the correct manual.)
2) If all the settings seem to be right, I'd let some time for the water in the reservoir to cool, then recheck. Say, a one-half hour?
I don't believe there'south any separate refrigeration for the water; I recollect it works off the main coils that cool the fridge itself. If that's correct, and then subsequently a half hr, you'll probably notice that the main part of the frig isn't cooling, either. (That is, you'll observe it's warming upward.) If y'all tin can't place a trouble with settings, as in pace 1, so y'all'll likely have to call a repair store.

Afterwards changing the filter water is hot. What do I practise?
Doctor Snowfall (author) from Camden, South Carolina on January 03, 2018:
Thanks for request, Ritzsplit!
The brusque answer is, I can't tell for sure. Starting time question: is the cartridge now leaking h2o? If not, that's clearly hopeful. If it is, then obviously it'due south now bad and needs to be replaced.
Second thing: either way, turn off the h2o, and see if you tin can remove the filter--by which I hateful 'remove it in one piece.' If you lot can, that's some other good sign.
If information technology comes out, but in two pieces, then you need a new filter, of class, merely at least you know where you lot are. And hopefully, you'll have no trouble with the reinstall.
On the other hand, if it doesn't want to come up out--I'm imagining a scenario here where the outside part of the filter just spins--then y'all have the choice of attempting to remove the bits separately, DIY manner, or calling a repair shop. I hesitate to recommend the starting time selection, equally there's considerable potential downside.
Third affair: if the filter does come up out in one piece, requite information technology a skillful inspection to come across if you tin spot whatsoever impairment. Look carefully, and think hard about what you come across. If you have another filter handy, you may want to compare the two. (Unless y'all're a lot nerdier about this than I am, y'all don't have a articulate thought of what the business end of the filter is *supposed* to await like.)
So if at that place's i) no leakage, two) the filter comes out OK, 3) looks all right under inspection, and 4) goes back in OK (and locks in place as it is supposed to do), so I'd say you've dodged the bullet on this little incident.
Good luck, and happy troubleshooting!

Thanks for the answer. He still hasn't tried annihilation because he'southward waiting for "Dad" to come downward and take care of it! Thanks again. Lou
Doc Snowfall (author) from Camden, Due south Carolina on August 22, 2017:
Hi, Al. My guess would be that the filter isn't seated correctly. I'd endeavor removing and then reinstalling information technology. You should be able to feel it click into place. If you're sure it'southward installed correctly and is fully seated in place, and in that location'southward still no flow, reinstall the old filter to see if that restores the flow. If it does, then y'all have good reason to believe that there'due south a problem with the new filter itself. One concluding caveat: permit time for any air in the filter and tubing to exist expelled. Be patient testing that--it'due south worth a few extra minutes to be sure that the new filter really *is* the problem!
But it's too possible that something else has coincidentally gone incorrect at the same time--it does happen sometimes, and when it does it can be pretty crazy-making. A couple of previous commenters accept had related problems; you lot may want to curlicue down a bit, see if their difficulties sound like yours, and possibly attempt my suggestions to them. (As of this writing, the first i is time-lined 'ii years ago.' It's non that far.)

Quite perhaps, Kevin. I no longer ain the model--we moved in December--but this is something manufacturers do seem to do. I'm sure they will still need to support existing models, though, so I wouldn't exist too worried.
Kevin on March 04, 2017:
Has Samsung inverse this filter? I had no problems getting these filters in for five years but now I cannot get the new one in. I noticed that the middle connectedness is larger at present with an O-band. The concluding one I removed did not accept this.
Dr. Snow (author) from Camden, Southward Carolina on March 03, 2017:
Bob, that's a proficient question, and thank you for asking information technology. The short answer, unfortunately, is "I don't know."
My outset concern would be decreased water flow through the filter. I don't call back you'd burn out any pumps, since the water pressure from the feed line is what feeds the system, but could decreased menstruum lead to any bug 'downstream' in the system? I doubt it, but can't be certain.
Secondly, is it possible that a kludged filter could go a hosting spot for bacteria or other nasties? Again, I don't actually know.
Whatsoever pros out there with more physical knowledge to accost Bob's question?

"Notation that your filter icon volition yet exist cherry-red afterward you accept finished, as shown in the photo above. To reset information technology, press and hold the h2o selector switch for three seconds."
If that doesn't do it, either the filter installed must be bad (unlikely simply possible, I suppose), or there is a problem with the sensor, in which instance yous demand a repairman.

Thanks for writing, gg, and sorry you're having troubles. I accept heard of this before. The cure is basically force, co-ordinate to the manufacturer. A previous commenter complained of a filter that was 'besides slippery' to pull out, and I suggested trying vice grips, padded with a towel or rag--only I never heard back whether that worked or not.
One thing in your comment gave me a bit of break, though; you lot wrote "I tin can't pull the water filter out of the door." The problem beingness, that with this model the filter isn't in the door--as shown in photo #3, it'south in the bottom right of the main compartment, where the bottom crisper drawer fits effectually it. Maybe you didn't mean literally 'the door of the fridge,' just the phrasing raised a dubiety in my heed equally to whether nosotros are talking virtually the aforementioned model or not. If not, of course, there is no telling whether any of the rest of the stuff in this Hub (like the fleck virtually the one-quarter counterclockwise turn) applies or not. And then you may desire to double-check the model number to make sure about that.
Sorry for the delay in replying to your comment--I've been on the road for several days, and didn't run into the detect. Skilful luck!
GG on November 06, 2016:
I tin't pull the water filter out of the door. Nosotros turned off the h2o supply, we turned the filter a quarter plow counterclockwise, and tried to pull it out, just it will not budge. We've tried many, many times. I tell you, I'm disgusted with this refrigerator. We take an ongoing issue with the water ice maker. It regularly crushes the ice into powdery chips instead of the cube option my wife and I fix it for. (We're a cube family; no crushed ice for united states of america.) At least 90% of the time I take to take out the entire ice compartment from the freezer and take out the cubes by mitt. Anyhow, has anyone else found the h2o filter impossible to remove? The affair will not budge at all.

Hi, Roxanne. I haven't had this experience. Only I'd try wiping the filter off to see if I can remove whatever is making information technology slippery, then retry.
Make sure you are clear on the management to turn the filter: i/4 turn counterclockwise (top moving left--"lefty, loosie" as they say.)
If the wipe-down doesn't do it, I'd employ a gripper such as slip-lock pliers or vice grips to improve my 'catch' on the filter. Probably best to pad the jaws with a dish towel or rag to aid keep the filter from bully, which volition just make information technology even tougher to get out.
The tool should help, both with the quarter plough to unlock, and and then with the straight pull to remove.
Good luck!
Roxanne on May 01, 2016:
the one-time filter is too slippery to pull out. ???
Md Snow (author) from Camden, Southward Carolina on March 06, 2015:
Not much idea, I'm afraid. But logically, in that location has to be a blockage. And if, as you imply, it appeared right after you made the change, and then chances are that it is something to do with the installation of the filter.
(Actually, there is another possibility, also, which is that for some reason the valve operating the water dispenser isn't working.)
But I'yard not sure where either of those two ideas takes u.s. in terms of troubleshooting. That's where in depth knowledge of the routing of the water through the unit, and of the various characteristics of the unit of measurement and its controls would exist useful.
Things to try:
--Recheck the filter 1 more time. Sounds like there'south not much take chances that you lot missed something, simply I'd recheck anyway.
--If that's OK, you could disconnect the feed at the back of the unit to make certain that water is at least reaching that point. That would isolate the problem to the fridge itself.
--Anything await iffy on the command panel? You could try resetting it. I doubt that's it, either, since I don't think it controls the water dispensing mechanism, but I don't know that for a fact.
--Closely inspect the surface area where the filter seats. (Yous'll probably need a powerful light to practice it.) Is in that location anything that looks broken, or whatsoever sign of an obstruction?
After that, I'yard pretty much out of ideas--other than calling a service pro.
